Background of the Study

Stigma surrounding mental health disorders significantly affects the willingness of individuals to seek help and adhere to treatment. In Kaduna State, young adults face unique challenges as they navigate academic, professional, and social pressures. Cultural and societal beliefs often label mental illness as a weakness or moral failing, leading to discrimination and social isolation. Such stigma can deter young adults from accessing necessary mental health services and exacerbate the burden of untreated mental health issues (Chinwe, 2023; Adebola & Lawal, 2024). Previous research indicates that stigma not only impacts individual well-being but also hinders public health initiatives aimed at mental health promotion. Despite the growing need for mental health support among young adults, there is limited localized research examining the stigma they experience. This study aims to explore the extent and nature of mental health stigma among young adults in Kaduna State, examining how it influences help-seeking behaviors, social interactions, and overall quality of life. By combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews, the study will provide a comprehensive overview of the stigma dynamics and suggest potential strategies to mitigate its negative effects.

Statement of the Problem

In Kaduna State, pervasive stigma surrounding mental health disorders significantly impedes young adults from seeking help and receiving appropriate treatment. Misconceptions and cultural biases often lead to labeling, social exclusion, and discrimination, which further isolate affected individuals. Many young adults are reluctant to discuss mental health issues due to fear of judgment and loss of social status, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment. This stigma contributes to a cycle of silence and neglect, exacerbating mental health conditions and hindering recovery. The lack of effective anti-stigma campaigns and mental health education further compounds the problem. Moreover, insufficient data on the specific nature of stigma among young adults in Kaduna State limits the ability of policymakers and mental health professionals to design targeted interventions. This study seeks to bridge this gap by systematically investigating the stigma surrounding mental health disorders among young adults, identifying its root causes, and evaluating its impact on help-seeking behavior and treatment outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of stigma associated with mental health disorders among young adults in Kaduna State.

2. To identify factors that contribute to mental health stigma in this demographic.

3. To propose strategies to reduce stigma and encourage help-seeking behavior.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence and nature of mental health stigma among young adults in Kaduna State?

2. What socio-cultural factors contribute to this stigma?

3. What interventions can effectively reduce stigma and improve access to mental health services?

Research Hypotheses

1. High levels of mental health stigma are prevalent among young adults in Kaduna State.

2. Cultural beliefs and social norms significantly contribute to the stigmatization of mental health disorders.

3. Targeted anti-stigma interventions will increase help-seeking behaviors among young adults.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on young adults aged 18–35 in urban areas of Kaduna State. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires, focus groups, and in-depth interviews. Limitations include potential social desirability bias and the sensitivity of the subject matter.
